A million thanks to our host, Sharp Healthcare, for giving us an inside look at their cutting edge approach to social media!

Sharp has an extremely active social presence, with a physical command center that centralizes their social media and PR. We learned that the center helps Sharp:

  • respond quickly to customers 365 days a year
  • identify trending topics for content development & customer engagement purposes
  • monitor competitors & understand share of voice
  • track what the media is talking about

Sharp uses social to drive business decisions by actively listening to customers. Each week, they send a VOC (voice of the customer) report to the executive team.

The company receives 2000+ mentions per month(!). They have one central team and 10 marketing teams working at the hospitals.

The social team is constantly evaluating and testing what topics resonate, performance of content and tweaking. Their focus is on a few social channels rather than spreading too thin.

Jennifer Balanky, Manager of Digital Content, Sharp HealthCare – Jennifer Balanky leads digital content and social media  strategy for Sharp HealthCare, San Diego’s largest health care provider. She and her team set the digital voice and tone of Sharp, and build engagement among the public and more than 18,000 Sharp employees. They also manage the execution of digital newsroom Sharp Health News and provide exceptional social care through Sharp’s Customer & Media Engagement Center. Prior to joining Sharp, Balanky spent more than 14 years as a digital journalist and editor at The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Rachael Martin, Social Media Specialist, Sharp HealthCare – Rachael Martin manages and executes day-to-day patient engagement and social media strategy for Sharp HealthCare’s social and reputation channels. She is responsible for identifying and applying relevant social media trends and tactics, implementing social care best practices, managing the Customer & Media Engagement Center and providing ongoing social media guidance and education to various departments throughout the organization. Rachael has more than 10 years of digital marketing experience, and prior to Sharp HealthCare, led strategy and account planning for national health care and hospitality brands at Mindgruve, a digital marketing agency in San Diego.

Pam Hardy, Managing Editor, Sharp Health News, Sharp HealthCare – As managing editor of Sharp Health News, Pam Hardy leads a team of more than 30 people in the creation and distribution of news stories, videos, infographics and patient testimonials from across Sharp HealthCare, San Diego’s largest health system.

Prior to joining Sharp in 2015, Hardy served as director of marketing and communications for California Western School of Law, and as the first communications director for the San Diego City Council President. She began her career in journalism, producing and hosting live daily news programming for San Diego’s NPR affiliate, KPBS-FM. She holds a degree in Communications and Political Science from UC San Diego.
