Communications Coordinator

The Position

The City of Carlsbad Communication & Engagement Department is currently recruiting for a part-time communication coordinator to assist with promoting classes, camps, programs and other activities for all ages, from preschool to active adults 50+.

Scheduled workdays and hours may vary, but a typical schedule would be four to five days a week, four to five hours a day. Work times would fall between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

About the Department

The successful candidate will join a high-performing, team-oriented group of communication professionals who are passionate about helping people connect to their local government. Day to day work in the department includes:

  • Community outreach and involvement: Develop programs that enhance public involvement in city government decision making
  • Online communication: Manage the city’s website, social media, email communication and other digital communication channels
  • Media relations: Provide accurate, timely information to the media
  • Informational materials: Develop fact sheets, fliers, newsletters, Q&A documents, videos and other communication pieces that further understanding of city issues, news, services and events
  • Cable channel: Enable the community to watch public meetings and find out about city issues, news, services and events on a 24/7 channel stream
  • Training: Provide communication skills training to city staff
  • Internal communication: Provide easy access, through a variety of channels, to information of interest to and affecting city employees
  • Emergency communication: Maintain a trained team of city staff and updated action plan to ensure the community has access to important information during an emergency

Key Responsibilities

The part time communication coordinator would perform the following functions under the direct supervision of the media and graphics supervisor:

  • Work with staff primarily in the Library & Cultural Arts and Parks & Recreation departments to identify classes, camps, events, programs and services in need of additional promotional support
  • Develop strategies to raise awareness of and encourage participation in the identified activities.
  • Write copy for and work with graphic designers to create promotional materials (print and digital)
  • Develop and execute targeted e-mail and text marketing campaigns
  • Measure the effectiveness of promotional campaigns
  • Assist with other outreach and engagement activities as needed


The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required for the position:

  • Proficiency in some combination of public relations, advertising, digital media, communication and marketing
  • Adept at working in collaborative and cooperative team environments
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines

Experience & Education

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would qualify. A typical way to acquire the skills and abilities would include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, English or marketing
  • Professional experience working public relations or marketing
  • Experience working for organizations offering enrichment and recreational activities
